About Me: The Journey of a Writer

Hello! My name is Dannesya, a multi-genre writer who has traveled a long road in the world of literature. Dannesya is my pen name, chosen when I decided to return to writing after a 10-year hiatus. It’s a shortened version of my full name, a new identity I’ve built to bring fresh stories to readers while creating a healthy boundary between my personal and professional life as a writer.

The Beginning of My Writing Journey

I received my first publishing contract during high school, around 2007. Back then, the publishing industry was very different, and the internet hadn’t become the powerful promotional tool it is today. At that time, I used my real name to appeal to people in my immediate circle—friends, family, and neighbors—encouraging them to support my book, which was available in bookstores.

As time passed, the publishing world and social media dynamics changed drastically. Privacy risks, like doxxing, became a real concern, leading me to adopt a pen name. When I decided to return to writing, Dannesya became my new identity, allowing me to engage with my old, loyal readers while building a fresh connection with new audiences.

Breaking into Traditional Publishing

Before becoming an indie author, I was a traditionally published writer. I had the privilege of working with some of Indonesia’s largest publishing houses, including Gramedia Pustaka Utama, Grasindo, KPG, Bentang Pustaka, and Penerbit Andi. During this phase, I published a total of 9 novels, all of which were distributed to major bookstores across Indonesia.

Seeing my books on shelves in prominent bookstores was a surreal experience, one I will always treasure. However, traditional publishing came with its limitations—primarily, a lack of creative freedom. I often had to align my stories with market trends or editorial preferences, which sometimes constrained my ability to experiment with unconventional ideas or genres.

A New Chapter: Becoming an Indie Author

After a decade-long hiatus, I returned to writing with a renewed sense of purpose. This time, I decided to become an indie author (self-published). This decision was driven by a few key reasons:

1. Environmental Sustainability

I now prefer the print-on-demand model, which is more eco-friendly and helps reduce paper waste associated with mass printing.

2. Creative Freedom

As an indie author, I have the freedom to write whatever I want, without worrying about following market trends. I’ve always loved exploring different genres, and self-publishing gives me the liberty to experiment with bold, unconventional ideas.

3. Learning Independence

Freedom comes at a price, as everyone knows. Transitioning from the structured world of traditional publishing to managing everything independently as an indie author wasn’t easy. I had to learn the ropes of editing, marketing, and even distribution. But every baby step I take is a step toward growth.

Novel #10: The Dating Club

My latest novel, The Dating Club, marks my 10th publication. This book is incredibly special to me because it reflects my evolution as a writer and my newfound freedom to create without constraints.

Publishing The Dating Club was also my way of reconnecting with my loyal readers, saying, “Hi there, I’m alive!” The novel is a testament to my belief in storytelling that is raw, emotional, and unafraid to break the mold.

My Vision as a Writer

My vision as a writer is simple yet profound:

Touch Hearts

I want my stories to resonate with readers, making them feel connected to the characters and their journeys.

Inspire and Share

Through my writing, I hope to inspire readers to dream big, reflect deeply, and embrace a range of emotions they may not have explored before.

Unbounded Creativity

I aim to write across genres, crossing traditional boundaries to create something fresh, unique, and authentic.

My journey as a writer has been one of courage, freedom, and growth. I’m incredibly grateful for the support of my readers, both those who have followed me since my traditional publishing days and those who have discovered me as an indie author.
